embellished tote

I saw this post from Susie Harris a while back and bookmarked it right away. I sorta have a thing for tote bags... maybe I should call it a collection. That sounds better, right?

Luckily I had the opportunity to 'embellish' a tote for a co-worker's daughter. She's not a girly-girl, so I was hoping it wouldn't turn out too girly. I personally think it's the perfect balance between tom-boy and girl.

Here's how I made mine:
{I got a pack of 3 tote bags for $5 & fabric for $1.50 at walmart.}

{I cut a 6 inch wide strip & folded the seams to the middle.}

{To save on some sewing, I used some heat bond & placed it every few inches.}

{I pinned down the end & started making random pleats.}

{I went all the way around the bag with random sized/angled pleats.}

When I went to sew the pleats on, I realized it would be easier to sew it inside out. So I had to re-pin it so each end of the pleat was secure. It only took me a few minutes. I turned it inside out and used the folded over top of the tote bag as my sewing guide. That way my machine only had to sew through 5 layers of fabric instead of 7.

Here's how I made the flower:
{I cut a handful of 2 inch squares. Then I gathered each one randomly and stitched it on.}

{Here is the beginning of the flower.}

{Once the center was established, I moved the next couple of tiers out toward the edge.

{I cut a circle to cover up all the stitching & attached it with hot glue.}

I put a pin on the back of the flower so she could remove it if it's too girly. I just used a large safety pin, don't go buying special pins. I forgot to take a photo, but I used a strip of fabric to hold the pin in place, I just hand-stitched it on.

{And there you have it! All done!}

I did this project on Friday night, it didn't take me very long at all. The flower took the longest to make.I think it's pretty cute, I might just have to make my own!
