Remember when I made those quadrupedal vanilla cupcakes with a real vanilla bean? I couldn't just toss that bean pod into the trash, it smelled way too good! And they cost a lot of money. I wanted to get everything I could out of that bean.
I picked up a canister from the store, cut the pod in half, and dropped it in. Then I filled the jar with sugar, and shook it up every couple of days. It's been about a month and the sugar already smells and tastes pleasantly vanilla. I sprinkled some on my strawberries... it tasted so good!
Next time I use a vanilla bean I'll just add it to my canister along with some more sugar.
Have you ever cooked or baked with a real vanilla bean?
PS: I got my vanilla beans from Costco and a really good price. Well, my parents did. We don't have a Costco here. Amazon has some good prices on them as well.
