i workout {on joining the gym}

I've been trying to lose a few pounds for at least two years. I've fluctuated within a ten pound range, but it's never permanent. I was lucky growing up. I ate whatever I wanted and never had to worry about gaining weight. Then one day my metabolism kicked in and now I'm much more cautious of what I eat.

I'd say I have decent eating habits. Not perfect, but I eat healthy a majority of the time and am good about portion control. I, of course, still have ice cream or potato chips when I want them, but I want to be able to eat what I want to eat instead of salivating over someone else's bag of chips. You know what I mean? If I didn't give in to those urges I would come home one day and just eat ALL THE THINGS. But obviously, only watching what I eat wasn't totally working.

So I decided to join the gym. I did a trial month earlier in the year and really enjoyed going to the pilates classes, but just couldn't commit to the gym at the time. I'll be honest, I have a bad record with consistency when it comes to the gym or working out. I don't find it enjoyable. So I purposefully waited to join until Steven was headed back to his busy season so I wouldn't have an excuse to go home instead of the gym. I would always rather go home to be with him than go workout. But now that he has a new job, I don't have to worry about missing the extra hour of time at home - he'll be there all the time! Steven is a great motivator too, that's been quite helpful.

I've started going to the pilates classes again, I rotate between the treadmill, elliptical and bike, and even use some of the free weights and machines. I have a workout calendar. I highlight the days that I make it to the gym. Steven keeps and eye on it and if it's not as colorful as it should be, he asks me about it.

I've lost and kept off three pounds since starting in August. So three pounds in two months. I'm also getting stronger, which is just as important as losing weight.

Do you go to a gym? What is your favorite way to exercise? Any tips to keep me motivated?

  1. I go to Wellaware since it's a benefit of my employment with Boone Hospital. I run on the treadmill, use the elliptical and use some of the weight machines. I think the best thing for me is to set goals (train to run a 5k, now I'm working on increasing my distance). I also have a set schedule for working out, certain days I run or elliptical or cross train in some different way.

  2. Ha, just blogged about the same issue the other day. I'm about to join a gym in November and I can't wait. I really struggled with my weight these last two years, too. A few pounds down, a few more pounds up again. So, well: I want to tackle that problem, too. Maybe we should motivate each other, too?

    P.S.: I do love pilates classes, too. ;-)
